MOTEL 6 TRANSFORMS FAMILIAR TRAVEL ICON

When Motel 6, an icon of budget-priced lodging, adds kitchens to lure long-term guests, you know a hotel trend has come of age. The Motel 6 at 8101 Springboro Pike, across from the Dayton Mall, has been renamed Studio 6. It now is an extended-stay hotel with ranges, refrigerators and sinks in each of the 134 rooms.

Studio 6 is equipped for travelers who are staying a week or longer, explains Roger Fangman, general manager. Each room has kitchen utensils, dishes and cookware, plus cable TV and housekeeping service.

Although extended-stay motels have been around for 20 years, it now is one of the fastest growing segments of the lodging industry, Fangman said. They now account for 20 percent of the hotels in the lodging industry.

Fangman said Dallas-based Motel 6 made the right move in switching the Dayton Mall property. `We’re running about 70 percent occupancy,’ Fangman said, `and more than half of that is extended stay business.’

Studio 6 still accepts overnight business, he said, but that may not last. `What happens is you eventually drop the overnight guests and just go with the extended stay.’

Plenty of conventional motels continue in business, but Fangman said extended stay is experiencing vigorous growth. `We were finding that more and more people were asking for weekly rates,’ he said of the Dayton Mall operation.

Studio 6 charges $41.99 for a single night or $199 for a full week.

Howard Nusbaum, executive vice president of the Ohio Hotel and Lodging Association, said the motel industry has matured and now is offering choices including extended stay.

Nusbaum said business travelers, transferred employees and families between residences are frequent customers of extended stay hotels.

Motel 6 is an 800-unit chain owned by a French concern, Accor Corp. The company launched the Studio 6 format in January and now has six open.
