Cancun, Las Vegas top choices for South Tulsans’ vacations

This summer, South Tulsa residents are flooding the beaches of Cancun in record numbers and beating a well-worn path to Las Vegas. “We are just being swamped with Cancun,” said Andrea Anton, co- owner of Dream Reality Travel, 8014 S. Memorial Drive. “It’s really something, because summer is usually the off-season (for Cancun). It’s been really unique this summer.”

Anton’s agency is averaging 20 to 30 bookings a month for trips to the resort city on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Couples and families traveling on a budget find the location easy on the pocketbook and easy to get to, she said.

“Normally 60 percent of what we sell are cruises and 40 percent Las Vegas and Mexico trips, but Cancun has just been going crazy,” said Anton.

All-inclusive package deals are the most popular option for travel to Cancun. The typical four-night package trip includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, all food and beverages, entertainment and non motorized sports like wind surfing, snorkeling and kayaking.

“You know before you leave what it’s going to cost, so people on a budget know to the penny what they are going to spend,” said Anton. Flights leave from Dallas, and vacationers can choose to drive there from Tulsa to get cheaper air rates.

The average cost of an all-inclusive package vacation to Cancun through Dream Reality Travel is around $500-700 per person.

“It’s an unbelievably hot destination,” said Esther Hammond, a travel agent with Travel Designs, 6931 S. 66th East Ave. “The younger to middle-aged set are going to Cancun.”

Just as popular, according to local travel agents, are trips to Las Vegas.

“I want you to know it seems like we sell more Las Vegas trips than anything else,” said Betty Kinney, general manager of Carlson Wagonlit Travel-Spears Travel.

Anton said her agency sells at least 10 to 20 trips a month to the gambling mecca. Round-trip air fare from Tulsa including hotel accommodations and entertainment and meal specials averages around $300 per person for a four-night stay.

“There’s a charter flight out of Tulsa that flies four times a week to Las Vegas that’s really popular,” said Jerrie Fox, a travel agent with Golden Travel, 7030 S. Yale Ave.

Cruises are also an ever-popular choice for those wanting to get away from it all.

“Right now, cruises to Alaska are becoming more popular,” said Kinney.

Those wanting to escape the summer heat are opting for trips to one of the coldest spots in the world, she said, adding that she is also seeing an increase in the number of trips to Europe.

“For a while people weren’t going to Europe, but they are again,” she said.

Carlson Wagonlit Travel also organizes more exotic trips for those who are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Kinney has organized one such vacation for a local couple who will take off for Africa in September.

“They’re going to a show in London, and then they’re going to Kenya for a safari, then they will tour Zimbabwe and South Africa before going back to Europe,” she said. “It’s just something that they had wanted to do.”

In February the agency put together a cruise to Aruba for some 480 astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts who wanted to witness the total eclipse of the sun there.

One of the most popular trips Kinney organizes each year is a show tour of New York during the Christmas season.

“It sells out every year,” she said. “That’s always really unique to see New York that time of year.”

The four-to-five-day trip includes round-trip airfare, three Broadway shows and meals at some of New York’s most elite restaurants.

One of the latest crazes for couples who are ready to elope or want an exotic wedding are cruises. Anton said cruise ships have recently started building wedding chapels on their ships.
