WHY CARIBBEAN ISLAND IS ATTRACTING MORE HOLIDAYMAKERS
Grenada has 45 beaches and the two-mile Grand Anse Beach is one of the most popular on the island. Although many of the island’s resorts and hotels are based on the beach, by law no hotel can exceed three storeys – or the height of a palm tree – so you don’t get the feeling that development is intrusive in any way.
In recent years Grenada has begun to protect some of its natural assets by creating a system of National Parks and Forest Reserves.
If you fancy a day away from the beach, the most popular area for hiking is the Grand Etang Forest Reserve, which is located high in the mountains. The focal point of the reserve is Grand Etang Lake, which fills a crater of one of the island’s extinct volcanoes.
There are a number of walks in the area, ranging from 15-minute trails to day-long treks.
It’s recommended that you wear sensible shoes, use plenty of mosquito repellent and carry a bottle of water with you at all times.
The Concord Falls, which is located on the edge of the Forest Reserve, is well worth a visit. Don’t worry if you don’t have the energy to walk, the falls are accessible by road.
The Caribbean islands generally tend not to have too many activities, it’s all about relaxing, therefore make sure you select a comfortable and well-equipped hotel. Be aware that food and drink can be quite costly.
Grenada has everything that you would expect from a Caribbean island – beautiful beaches, luxury resorts and friendly locals.
It is also known as the Spice Island of the Caribbean as it produces everything from nutmeg to cocoa.
Dougaldston is the oldest spice plantation on the island and a trip here to see the spices drying in the sun is like taking a step back in time.
The best way to sample the spices is to go to the local market at St George’s, the island’s capital, on a Saturday morning. It’s a good way to meet the locals, sample Caribbean culture and take photographs.
The people are very friendly and willing to let you try many of the products before you buy, but make sure you ask permission before you snap their picture.
Grenada is the island of sun, sea, sand and spice, but if you jump back a letter in the alphabet, you will discover another of the Caribbean’s greatest products – rum!
The Grenada Sugar Factory produces a number of award-winning local rums.
Before a tasting session, you have the opportunity to see what goes into a bottle. The factory is run with steam technology, which was shipped over from Scotland in the 30s and on a guided tour you can follow the process through from the raw cane to the finished bottled product.
A word of warning though – this place is very much a working factory and you need to be very careful of spinning wheels, jets of steam and very potent alcohol fumes!
