Far North preferred as beach holiday destination
Despite our crocodiles, stingers, mudflats and lack of surf, more people prefer Cairns as a beach holiday destination than Noosa or Surfers Paradise. A new survey has found that apart from the Whitsundays, Cairns was considered the most desirable beach holiday destination north of Coffs Harbour.
Results were based on 600 surveys done in Cavill Mall at Surfers Paradise in March and April.
More than half the respondents were from interstate or overseas.
Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive officer Rob Giason said it was “fantastic” Cairns was regarded one of the most ideal destinations for beach holidays.
“But obviously we need to work harder to reach a higher level of desirability to surpass the Whitsundays,” Mr Giason said.
While surprised at how well received our beaches were, Mr Giason said they had a different set of values and qualities from the southern surf beaches.
While strong in desirability, the survey showed both North Queensland regions fell down because of a belief they were the least affordable.
Cairns fared better than the Whitsundays but was regarded as more costly than Coffs Harbour, Surfers Paradise, Byron Bay and Noosa.
Mr Giason said results showed work was needed to remove the perception that because you were further away you were more expensive.
“Low-cost airlines prove that is not the case,” he said.
He thought Cairns ranked as desirable because it had more to offer than its Queensland and northern New South Wales counterparts.
