Caribbean is worth considering as a summer destination

Le Rendezvous in the same development offers full dinners for only $7, breakfast specials including eggs from $2. The Xanadu Hotel has an excellent Sunday brunch with unlimited champagne for $16, she reports. While these prices are not low by Canadian standards, they are very reasonable by Bahamian standards. Food is expensive in the Bahamas, as it is in most of the Caribbean, because little is grown locally.

Some of the most interesting islands of the Bahamas, especially for sports fishermen, scuba divers and those in search of isolation, are the smaller islands known as the Out Islands or the Family Islands. Bargains in the Bahamas are relatively rare, but travel on the mailboats serving these remote islands is among them. Mailboats serve most of the populated islands, from Bimini to Crooked Island and Eleuthera.

For example, the Current Pride carries freight, mail and up to 80 passengers on weekly trips from Nassau to the Family Islands. The 4 1/2- hour trip to Eleuthera, which includes a stop at Current Island, costs only $10 U.S. with outside passage, $12 inside, and includes a light lunch. These boats provide an inexpensive way to reach the Out Islands, where accommodation is often less expensive than in Nassau or Freeport.

They can also provide a pleasant day cruise at bargain rates, and a chance to meet the locals. The sea around the Bahamas is amazingly clear and blue, and constitutes one of the major attractions of the country.

The Moselle area of Germany is one of the country’s most scenic and least expensive regions. The Mosel is less renowned than the Rhine, but equally beautiful. Its banks are lined with villages of half-timbered houses, and castles guard many of the hilltops. Not least of the area’s attractions are its wines – light, fruity and moderately priced.

Mid-October is grape harvest time along the Moselle, and a good time to visit. For a close-up look at wine-growing and wine-making, travellers can rent accommodation from local vintners. Lodging may be in old farmhouses, most of which have been restored and equipped with modern conveniences, or in separate apartments. Best of all, prices for bed and breakfast range from only about $10 to $37 per person per night, depending on the quality of accommodation.
