OCEAN BEACH AT FIRE ISLAND WHAT TO EAT WHEN YOU GET THERE

September 7th, 2011 No comments

The good news from Ocean Beach this year is that the ordinance banning eating on the street has been rescinded. No more sneaking ice cream cones in back alleys. However, you still can’t drink outdoors unless it’s from a water fountain. Ocean Beach, the most populated community on Fire Island, is 30 minutes by ferry from Bay Shore. No need to worry about parking. Cars are not permitted. Breakfast can be a brisk business but few restaurants serve dinner before 6 p.m. During the rest of the day everyone is out working on a tan. September 6th, 2011 No comments

VANCOUVER-HOWE SOUND — Sewell’s in Horseshoe Bay says fishing has picked up for springs and coho. Most spring catches range from 12 to 15 lbs. Coho are between five and eight lbs. The best action is taking place off the mouth of the Capilano River. Anglers are also reporting significant bites along the West Vancouver shoreline. Early morning seems to be the most productive. They recommend anchovies for the springs and white hoochies for the coho. Read more…

It’s getting there that’s all the fun: On a river cruise, the destination is secondary

September 5th, 2011 No comments

On the Saone River, France – In autumn my mind turns to France where the air seems perfumed with the bouquet of ripe grapes of Beaujolais and Burgundy. Here fields slumber under blankets of late blooming flowers, red, yellow and blue. Much of France is special for its rivers. One – the Saone, where I was not that long ago – winds through Burgundy, a province whose very name brings to mind thoughts of fresh bread and tasty cheese and most of all red wines that are world renowned. ALONG A LAZY RIVER SATUCKET AREA: A GREAT SUMMER DESTINATION FOR NATURE LOVERS

September 3rd, 2011 No comments

Most of our inland waters are frustratingly inaccessible to the foot traveler. Humanity’s private properties block the ponds, and nature’s marshy holdings guard the rivers. But here and there we may directly approach the waters to which we are so mysteriously drawn. The Phillips Wildlife Area in East Bridgewater is such a place. Flowing along and shaping its northern boundary is the feature in question — the Satucket River. Together with the forest bordering its southern bank, it is an attractive summertime destination full of birds, painted turtles and a scenic picnic spot or two. Read more…

West Island hailed as world-class destination

September 2nd, 2011 No comments

What does the West Island have in common with Paris, Rome, Vienna and virtually every great city in the world? If you guessed fine restaurants, great shopping and beautiful scenery, you’d be only partially correct. What it has in common is that, just like in those cities, you can mail a postcard from here. Not just any old postcard, but one depicting Pointe Claire, Ste. Anne de Bellevue or Cap St. Jacques. Read more…

A boat ride makes Gambier Island a day-trip destination

August 31st, 2011 No comments

When most folks think of islands, they think of kayaking, canoeing and sailing. But B.C. islands are great hiking destinations as well. Many Gulf Islands accessible by B.C. Ferries are good for day hikes in a summer spent around the Strait of Georgia. Close to home is Mount Artaban on Gambier Island, but as no ferry lands there, you’ll need access to a boat. Read more…

ISLAND DESTINATION A NATURAL

August 30th, 2011 No comments

When it comes to retirement destinations, South Vancouver Island is a natural. The area is blessed with some of the best scenery in B.C., balmy weather in winter, and just enough isolation to put the rest of the world in a fresh perspective. Islanders take things a little more laid back than most, says Rob Fraser, president of the Victoria Real Estate Board. A native-born Victorian, Fraser says once people experience life on the Island, they never want to leave. Read more…

Vancouver Island hailed as `best island destination’ in North America

August 29th, 2011 No comments

For most Canadians, the phrase “Island destination” evokes a tropical setting, complete with palm trees, steel guitars or drums, and drinks with umbrellas. But a U.S. travel magazine has rated Vancouver Island the best island destination in North America. In fact, Travel and Leisure magazine rates the Island the No. 3 island destination in the world — after Hawaii’s Maui and Kauai and ahead of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef islands and many other better-known islands.
